Effective Estate Tax Planning Techniques - July 14, 2016

Basic, But Effective Estate Tax Planning Techniques and How the IRS May Look at These

Sponsored by Bloomberg BNA

When should clients use family limited partnerships, LLCs, and other entities? What challenges may the IRS assert regarding the use of SCINs? What savings may result from transferring discounted interests in entities?  These are just some of the questions that will be answered in this webinar which will also take a look at IRS filing requirements, the penalties clients face for failure to report items properly, and when to use an offshore trust versus a domestic asset protection trust.

Educational Objectives:
• Understand the benefits of using family limited partnerships, LLCs, and other entities which allow clients to take a discount
• Review the challenges that the IRS may assert related to the use of self-cancelling installment notes
• Gain better insights into using discounted interests by either making sales or gifts to intentionally defective grantor trusts and the benefits that can arise from such planning

Speaker:

John Porter - a Senior Partner and Partner-In-Charge of the Houston Office of Baker Botts.  He handles federal gift, estate and income tax litigation and controversy work. He is nationally recognized for his expertise in representing taxpayers before and against the Internal Revenue Service in estate and gift tax controversies, especially those involving hard-to-value assets such as interests in family limited partnerships and limited liability companies.

Retaliation is the most common type of charge filed against private-sector employers with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, inching up to 44.5 percent of all charges filed in 2015.  At the same time, whistleblower retaliation claims are on the uptick, fueled by court developments and frequent headlines announcing multimillion-dollar whistleblower awards.  In this webinar, we'll cover the latest retaliation and whistleblower developments under California and federal law, including new cases and regulatory changes.  We'll also discuss best practices employers can implement to prevent claims and stay out of court.

How the Amendments Change the E-discovery Process - Self Study

How the Amendments Change the E-discovery Process

Sponsored by AccessData

New rules generally require new roadmaps for compliance. Learn what “best of breed” approaches will work in the new environment. Expect more active judicial case management, including inquiries into how ESI is being preserved and what production methods are planned.
The new rules also require attorneys to be prepared to comply with higher standards for specificity in stating objections to discovery requests [§34(b)(2)]; boilerplate won’t cut it any more.

Investigating Online: Conducting Pre-Interview Research - Self Study

Investigating Online: Conducting Pre-Interview Research

Sponsored by i-Sight

Going into an investigation interview with no knowledge of the interview subject is like going into a job interview with no knowledge about the company. You’re unlikely to get the information you need (or the job you want).
Before meeting an interview subject an investigator should do some online research on the interview subject. Background information can help the investigator establish rapport, identify areas of vulnerability and determine questioning strategies.
Cynthia Hetherington will outline strategies for conducting effective online research on an interview subject.
Webinar attendees will learn:
  • Search methodology to use to efficiently zero in on your target
  • Types of information that can be helpful to an investigator
  • Which sites to explore for different kinds of information on individuals
  • Common mistakes investigators make when researching online
  • How to search social media sites discreetly
:

Speaker:

Cynthia Hetherington, MLS, MSM, CFE, - Cynthia has more than 20 years of experience in research, investigations and corporate intelligence. She was the recipient of the 2012 'Speaker of the Year Award' from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (www.ACFE.org).
